No matter what you read and no matter what people try to teach you about methods and strategies to become a serious entrepreneur, there really is only one key element that you need to succeed: effort. To make all your efforts worthwhile, you need another key element, and that is focus.

Lose By an Inch or Win By a Mile

Sometimes the chance for success or failure to become a serious entrepreneur passes by quicker than the blink of an eye. It could be that one inquiry that you chose not to answer, or one customer whom you did not take the time to build a relationship with. There are even times that you may actually be turning away an opportunity…that could turn your life around for what seemed like a better deal at that time.

There is a saying that opportunity knocks only once, but in some cases, it just stands by the door without even knocking. If you’re going to give being a business owner a shot, you might as well put your back into it and give it all you’ve got.

Second Nature

It’s really not that hard to give the extra effort, if you have the right mindset, and that is the mindset of a serious entrepreneur. Here are a few things that you should always keep in mind:

• Treat all your customers or clients well. It does not matter whether they are buying thousands of dollars worth of products, or just a single item. Value their input, and treat one as well as the other. While it is a good practice to be reasonable, there are times that you have to stand your ground, and if you are able to do this with tact and grace, you will realize that there is almost always a way to compromise.
• Always see the big picture. The common problem with new business owners is that they dwell too much on one detail (commonly making profits) and miss the part of how each little thing is related to the other. The sum of the business will always be worth more than its parts, and this is something that a serious entrepreneur should always keep in mind.
• Play right and play fair. Don’t be the rotten apple that ruins the whole barrel. There is a difference between making money and wanting everything for yourself. In the end, you will be doing a disservice to yourself and the entire industry.

In all of these acts, the important thing is that you are sincere and that you have genuine concern for your clients, as well as the industry in general. The bottom line is not just about dollars and cents because businesses do not run on money alone.

• Stop everything that you are doing and evaluate them in terms of effectiveness and results.
• Work with what you have. Remember that only a bad worker blames his tools.
• Be ready to take some hits. Things will not always work as planned, and you can’t always be ready with contingencies.
• Ask for help if you need it. Take it if it is being offered.

These are the things that will help you trim down your workload and help you concentrate your efforts towards work that will end in good results and make the world take you seriously as a serious entrepreneur.

Stick to the Plan

You can compromise on your plan of action and adjust your moves to the demands of the market, but NEVER compromise your goals. Doing that would be like changing directions mid-flight; and if you make the wrong turn, you could end up crashing. If you want to achieve something, you must always keep that goal in sight.

Having a plan means you can minimize your risks, although it will be impossible to get rid of them altogether. That is why you have to learn to roll with the punches and learn from your mistakes. Accept the fact, too, that you will be making some mistakes…you just don’t want to make too many of them. Never act rashly or impulsively; costly mistakes are hard to correct, and it will make you look unprofessional.

Know What Your “Why” Is

If you are starting to doubt if your plans are working, remind yourself often why you are doing this and see how your current plans will bring you closer to your goals. Always set your compass as if the magnet is your goal and you are heading north.

This is the path to your future as a serious entrepreneur, and you should not shy away from it.

Ray knew that the quality of the food he was serving wasn’t close to that of his competitors. He also knew that potential franchise buyers could have cared less about the hamburgers. What they did want was to make money.

Ray was a total genius to figure out how to give his potential buyers what they wanted.

3. All Systems Go: The key to McDonald’s success with both franchise owners and customers was its duplicable system.

So Ray sold them EXACTLY what they wanted…NOT a restaurant but a “machine.”

He didn’t sell them the food…he sold them a reliable system.

He fine-tuned that system until it could be run by high-school age teens! All they have to do is man the system…throw some switches that run the machine that does the bulk of the work all on it’s own…fully automated. No one stands at the grill flipping burgers anymore.

The competition was left in the dust! Investors literally tripped over themselves to get one of Ray’s magical “machines.”

So, as a network marketer, selling a business franchise, what are you selling to your potential buyers? Unfortunately, you are probably trying to sell them on your company and your product.

True, there are times when there are just too many things to do and multi-tasking seems like the only way to get them done. But for the things that are really crucial, focus and concentration is the name of the game, particularly in business.

A truly serious entrepreneur does not multi-task!

Multi-tasking, by definition, is said to be the act of simultaneously doing two or more tasks in hopes of doing the most number of tasks in the least amount of time. Simply put, it’s the most you can do in the fastest way you can do them.

An example that many of us do without even noticing it is listening to a news report while sipping coffee while reading the newspaper while keeping an eye on your kid or sibling while they finish their breakfast. Without even intending or noticing it, that’s four things at once! Cool, right?

In the short-term, multi-tasking is okay, as long as what you’re doing is fairly routine and technically simple. These things are so complex that an irregularity in performing here or there will severely damage the whole process. This is called “continuous partial attention”, and it is okay for those everyday, mundane situations. But the life of a successful entrepreneur is anything but mundane…

Especially when it comes to business!

One of the things that a serious entrepreneur needs is concentration, especially if your business is one that calls for face-to-face or personal interaction with customers. No customer would be thrilled if you would be talking to them, while at the same time, talking to another customer on your phone while emailing another on your computer. No one will ever accuse you of being a competent entrepreneur if you’re like this, much less a serious entrepreneur.

The switching cost is way too high to pay!

The effect on the human brain of multi-tasking and its effects on productivity have long since been studied by experimental psychologists. Studies have shown that there is a “switching” cost of four minutes to get back to maximum productivity in between switching tasks. Get back to the first example. It will take you approximately sixteen minutes to complete a cycle of multi-tasking with maximum productivity. For a serious entrepreneur, those sixteen minutes is too much to waste.

Knowing that, would you still think that multi-tasking is a good thing for you and your business? True, a serious entrepreneur just has too many things to do, and sometimes 24 hours a day just isn’t enough.

However, any successful entrepreneur should not sacrifice quality for quantity and should finish one task at a time. In the long-run, what you’ll spend in time you’ll more than make up for in productivity. What’s more, you’ll feel less stress, as your mind is only occupied with one thing at a time. If you keep on taking things one at a time, you’ll see that, sooner or later, your workload has been significantly reduced and your end results have superb quality. Truly, this is what every successful entrepreneur wants in the end!

If you are a novice in an enterprise like Internet marketing, it is a good idea to have someone show you the ropes – perhaps one of those successful entrepreneurs who knows what he or she is talking about.

But finding someone who is probably more successful in selling just the idea of success to you, as opposed to any actual, useful, and practical knowledge doesn’t really qualify as teaching.

“Those who can’t do, teach.” An adage that you have probably heard at some time, or another. This is a saying that can sometimes be true, although it does underestimate the complex skill needed to teach something to someone.

On the flip side of that coin is the idea that those who CAN do, CAN’T teach because knowing something inside your head and applying it to practical use, as well as being able to get someone else to do it as successfully as what you have are two very different things.

Grain of Salt

Like hawkers selling their wares, you have probably been bombarded with e-mails and ads about how to become a top earner. But before you take their word as gold (or alternatively click on the “delete all” button), here are a few tips to help you decide when to sit up and pay attention and when not to:

1. Look at your history with the so-called guru, and gauge your success with him. If you have no history, ask around and look for someone who does.

2. Find out what you do need to know, and determine if this guru seems like a credible source for that knowledge.

3. If the advertiser is more keen on selling you something, rather than concerned about the final outcome and how it could possibly affect you, that is a red flag. Of course, no guru can give you a 100 percent guarantee of success, but he should, at least, be able to tell you what the odds of you becoming one of them successful entrepreneurs are.

4. When you have found a teacher who is a good fit to what you need and what you can afford (that is to say, one who can explain things in ways that are useful to you), then he has earned your trust enough to build a relationship with him. There are, indeed, successful entrepreneurs out there who are definite keepers, so hold on to them when you do find them. Sooner or later, you will have earned yourself a passage to the exclusive successful entrepreneurs club.
